FabFilter Pro-C 3: The Compressor That Covers Every Style

FabFilter Pro-C 3 arrived in early 2026 as the biggest update the plugin has ever had. Six new compression styles, character modes for tube-style saturation, expanded sidechain EQ and full immersive audio support push it past every other digital compressor on the market. Pro-C 2 owners get a real reason to upgrade for the first time in years.

Producers who reach for different hardware compressors on different sources can now stay inside Pro-C 3 and get the sound they wanted from the outboard.

What’s Inside

  • 14 compression styles: Clean, Classic, Opto, Vocal, Mastering, Bus, Punch, Pumping, plus six new — Versatile, Smooth, Vari-Mu, El-Op, Upward, TTM (To The Max)
  • Character modes: Tube, Diode, Bright — analog saturation and drift blended before or after compression
  • 6-band sidechain EQ: shape what the compressor listens to with high-pass, low-pass, bell, shelf and brickwall filters
  • Auto Threshold: level-independent triggering that stays consistent as the mix evolves
  • Host tempo triggering: rhythmic sidechain effects locked to your DAW tempo
  • Dolby Atmos 9.1.6: full immersive audio channel linking
  • Look-ahead up to 20 ms: catch transients cleanly on drums and vocals
  • Interactive gain reduction display: see exactly what the compressor is doing at any moment

Who Is It For?

Mix engineers use Pro-C 3 as their default compressor on every source — the workflow beats plugin-hopping across five different comps. Mastering engineers pick Bus or Mastering with Diode character for a mix bus glue that used to require a hardware Vari-Mu. Vocal producers reach for El-Op with a touch of Tube for smooth, warm compression. Beat makers use TTM on 808s to get a target loudness without a limiter.

System Requirements

  • macOS 10.13 or higher, 64-bit, Apple Silicon native
  • Windows 11, 10, 8 (32-bit and 64-bit)
  • Formats: VST, VST3, AU, AAX, CLAP, AudioSuite
  • Any DAW that hosts these formats

What’s New in Pro-C 3

The six new styles are the headline. Versatile handles any source without style-hopping. Smooth glues busses without pumping. Vari-Mu delivers feedback compression modelled on classic hardware. El-Op stays smooth and warm — the go-to for vocals. Upward pumps softer parts up without the usual clipping penalty. TTM combines upward and downward compression on multiple bands to target a specific level. Character modes on top of those styles let you dial in analog saturation without a separate saturation plugin in front.

How Producers Use FabFilter Pro-C 3

Pop vocal engineers stack Pro-C 3 twice — El-Op first for gentle levelling, then Vocal for the second stage that catches loud words. Trap producers put TTM on 808s to bring the mid-bass forward without frequency clashing. House and techno mixers set Pumping style with tempo-synced sidechain for the classic four-on-the-floor duck. Mastering engineers pick Mastering style with Diode character for a mix bus that sounds mixed on analog gear. See our mixing plugins collection for the full chain.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Pro-C 3 worth upgrading from Pro-C 2?

For most mix engineers, yes. The six new styles cover ground Pro-C 2 couldn’t — Vari-Mu, El-Op and Smooth in particular deliver sounds you previously needed different plugins to get. Character modes replace the need for a separate saturation plugin in the sidechain. If Pro-C 2 already covers your workflow, wait for a sale, but the upgrade is a real step forward.

How does Pro-C 3 compare to Vari-Mu hardware?

The Vari-Mu style models the feedback topology used in classic tube compressors — the same principle behind the sound of the Manley Variable Mu and Fairchild 670. It doesn’t replace hardware, but it gets close enough that a lot of mix engineers use it in place of the hardware for song after song.

Does Pro-C 3 work in FL Studio and Ableton Live?

Yes. Pro-C 3 supports VST, VST3, AU, AAX and CLAP formats. That covers FL Studio (VST3), Ableton Live (VST3 and AU on Mac), Logic Pro (AU), Cubase, Studio One, Pro Tools (AAX) and Reaper. Apple Silicon native build so it runs without Rosetta on M-series Macs.
