u-he Zebra 3: The Twelve-Year Wait Ended in April 2026

u-he Zebra 3 launched April 20 2026 at €249 — a ground-up rebuild of the Zebra legacy that made Zebra 2 a favourite among Hans Zimmer and Junkie XL. Spline-based wavetable editor, four wavetable/additive hybrid oscillators, four FM oscillators, two physical modelling oscillators, over 1,200 factory presets. The interface uses an adaptive Generator Rack that shows only the modules used in each patch. Twelve years of development, released as u-he’s new flagship.

What’s Inside

  • Spline-based wavetable editor: create wavetables from scratch with 150+ sculpting tools and guide curves, not just browse pre-built libraries
  • Four wavetable/additive hybrid oscillators: morph between hand-drawn spline waveforms, render as wavetables (up to 16-voice unison) or additive engines (up to 1,024 sine partials)
  • Four FM oscillators: through-zero FM for classic Yamaha DX and modern FM synthesis
  • Two physical modelling oscillators: modal resonator plus comb filter with exciter modules for organic instrument-like sounds
  • Adaptive Generator Rack: modules appear only when you add them, interface stays clean
  • Two serial FX slots per oscillator: 20 processes including spectral filtering, phase distortion, animated spectral decay
  • 1,200+ factory presets: professionally programmed across every synthesis type
  • Modular routing: signal flow visible in the Generator Rack for full patch understanding
  • MPE support: full expression on Roli Seaboard, LinnStrument, Osmose controllers

Who Is It For?

Sound designers and film composers who want the deepest wavetable synth on the market. Producers moving up from Serum or Vital who need more synthesis types (additive, FM, physical modelling) in the same plugin. Hans Zimmer-style hybrid orchestral composers who already used Zebra 2 for evolving cinematic textures. Anyone who wants a synth that can be “the Photoshop of synthesis” — genuinely deep, but with an interface that stays clean because modules only appear when used.

System Requirements

  • macOS 11 or higher, 64-bit, Apple Silicon native
  • Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit)
  • Formats: VST, VST3, AU, AAX, CLAP, Standalone

What Zebra 3 Adds Over Zebra 2

The spline-based wavetable editor is the biggest addition — no other wavetable synth ships with a full creation suite of this depth. The Generator Rack replaces the static grid layout with an adaptive interface that only shows modules currently in use. Physical modelling oscillators are new. Additive engine goes up to 1,024 partials. Through-zero FM works across all four FM oscillators. The 1,200-preset factory library replaces Zebra 2’s content with fresh sound design programmed for the new architecture.

How Producers Use u-he Zebra 3

Film composers layer wavetable oscillators for evolving pad textures, FM oscillators for metallic bell layers, and physical modelling oscillators for organic string-like sounds — all in one patch. Sound designers use the spline editor to draw custom wavetables from mathematical curves rather than browsing prebuilt libraries. Ambient producers set additive engines with 1,024 partials for pure sine cluster tones that shift over time. Trap and hip-hop producers reach for the wavetable oscillators through spectral FX for aggressive lead sounds. See our synthesizer plugins collection for related tools.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Zebra 3 worth the twelve-year wait?

For sound designers and film composers, yes. The spline-based wavetable editor genuinely doesn’t exist in other wavetable synths. Physical modelling oscillators, additive engine up to 1,024 partials, and the adaptive Generator Rack push Zebra 3 past what Serum, Vital or Pigments can cover in the same plugin. For producers who only need wavetable synthesis, Serum or Vital might still be enough. For everyone else, Zebra 3 is the deeper tool.

Does Zebra 3 replace Zebra 2?

Zebra 3 is a ground-up rebuild — patches from Zebra 2 don’t load in Zebra 3. u-he continues to support Zebra 2 for producers with legacy sessions. Zebra 3 is the new flagship; Zebra 2 stays available for people who need the old patches to keep working.

Does Zebra 3 work on Apple Silicon?

Yes. Native Apple Silicon build. Runs on M1, M2, M3, M4 and M5 Macs without Rosetta. CPU is reasonable across most patches — dense modular routings use more.
