FabFilter Pro-R 2: The Reverb That Fits Any Mix
FabFilter Pro-R 2 covers realistic acoustic spaces, retro digital reverbs and classic plates — three distinct algorithms in one plugin. The stepless Space control moves through a dozen room models without clicks or artifacts, so tuning the reverb to the source feels like turning a single knob, not switching presets. Pro-R 2 also imports impulse responses and recreates them as algorithmic setups you can shape further.
What’s Inside
- Three core algorithms: Room (realistic spaces from booths to halls), Vintage (bright ’80s and ’90s digital character), Plate (metallic ’50s and ’60s plate reverb sound)
- Space control: stepless morph through a dozen carefully modelled room shapes without artifacts
- Decay Rate EQ: industry-first — set different decay times per frequency across the whole spectrum
- IR import: load an impulse response and Pro-R 2 recreates its character as an algorithmic patch you can edit
- Ducking: wet signal drops automatically when dry signal is present, keeping vocals clear
- Thickness knob: add density and saturation without changing the reverb tail character
- Auto Gate: tempo-syncable gate for ’80s-style gated reverbs
- Freeze button: capture and hold the tail indefinitely for pads and ambience
- Dolby Atmos 9.1.6 immersive: places reverb in three-dimensional space
Who Is It For?
Mix engineers use Pro-R 2 as the send reverb on vocal and drum busses — the Ducking control keeps vocals present without needing a separate compressor on the send. Producers use Freeze for pads and cinematic sound design. Film and TV mixers use the Dolby Atmos support for scene reverbs that stay coherent in a 9.1.6 room. Anyone tired of stacking three different reverbs to cover Room, Vintage and Plate reaches for Pro-R 2 for the single-plugin workflow.

How Producers Use FabFilter Pro-R 2
Pop and R&B vocal producers set Room with Ducking on the vocal send — the tail dips out of the way when the singer is loud, comes back in the gaps. Trap producers use Plate on snares for the classic trap snare reverb throw. Ambient producers hit Freeze on a synth chord and let it hang while they play a new melody over the top. Cinematic composers use Vintage with Decay Rate EQ tilted so the high frequencies fade fast and the lows sustain — the sound of ’80s scores. Frequently Asked Questions
How does Pro-R 2 compare to Pro-R 1?
Pro-R 2 adds two new algorithms (Vintage and Plate), impulse response import, Auto Gate, tempo sync and full immersive audio up to Dolby Atmos 9.1.6. Pro-R 1 was already a strong reverb — Pro-R 2 expands what one plugin can cover. Existing Pro-R 1 owners upgrade because the Vintage and Plate modes replace the need for other plugins.
Can Pro-R 2 replace a convolution reverb?
For most producers, yes. IR import lets you drop in impulse responses of hardware reverbs or real spaces and Pro-R 2 recreates them as algorithmic patches. You keep the character of the IR but gain the ability to tweak decay time, EQ and modulation on top — something a straight convolution reverb can’t do.
Is Pro-R 2 good for vocals?
Yes. Room algorithm with Ducking is the standard vocal reverb setup — the tail steps out of the way during phrases and fills the space between them. Plate works well for ’70s and ’80s vocal sounds. Vintage sits on rap and hip-hop vocals where the retro ’80s digital sound belongs.
