U-he Presswerk Free is the free demo edition of Berlin developer U-he’s flagship analogue-modelled compressor. Presswerk takes the best behaviour of classic VCA and Fairchild-style hardware compressors and rebuilds them in software with U-he’s renowned analogue-modelling craftsmanship.

Drum bus compression is the classic application — Presswerk’s VCA character pulls drum kits together with the punch and forward push that defined eighties and nineties rock and electronic records. On vocals it provides smooth, transparent levelling. On the mix bus it adds the analogue glue that makes a mix feel finished. Producers reach for it when they want compression that flatters the source rather than disappearing.
