Logic Pro 12: Apple’s January 2026 Flagship Update

Logic Pro 12 released 28 January 2026 as Apple’s current professional DAW for Mac. Version 12 adds Synth Player (a new Session Player for electronic and synth-based music), Chord ID (analyses audio or MIDI and converts to chord progressions in Logic’s chord track), Quick Swipe Comping finally on iPad, and a strategic shift — Intel Mac support has been removed. Logic Pro 12 requires Apple Silicon and macOS 15.6 or later. Version 12.3 recently added a new Alchemy granular mode and refined Chord ID.

What’s Inside Logic Pro 12

  • Synth Player: new Session Player aimed at electronic and synth-based music — generates chordal textures and bass parts following the project’s harmonic structure, can trigger third-party Audio Units and control external hardware synthesisers
  • Chord ID: analyses audio or MIDI recordings and converts them into usable chord progressions in Logic’s chord track, removing manual transcription work
  • Quick Swipe Comping on iPad: the Mac-native comping workflow finally arrives on iPad, closing a long-standing workflow gap
  • Session Players — Drummer, Bass Player, Keyboard Player, Synth Player: complete AI-powered band with drums, bass, keys and now synth accompaniment following your chord progressions
  • Stem Splitter: AI-powered four-way audio separation (Drums, Bass, Vocals, Other) — still requires M-series Apple Silicon
  • Alchemy synthesiser: 12.3 update added new granular mode expanding Alchemy’s synthesis palette
  • ChromaGlow: hardware saturation modelling with five styles for warmth, presence and punch
  • Multi-touch Trackpad and controller support: full Apple ecosystem integration
  • Sampler and Quick Sampler: professional sampling with time and pitch manipulation

Who Is It For?

Mac users with Apple Silicon who want Apple’s current professional DAW. Songwriters using the complete Session Player family — Drummer, Bass Player, Keyboard Player and now Synth Player — for solo composition without a live band. Producers doing electronic and synth-based music who benefit from Synth Player’s chord-following accompaniment. Film composers and podcasters using the deep audio editing and AI features. Anyone who values Apple’s tight macOS integration and doesn’t need Intel Mac support.

System Requirements

  • macOS 15.6 or higher (Mac only — no Windows version)
  • Apple Silicon Mac required — Intel Mac support removed in Logic Pro 12
  • 8 GB RAM minimum, 16+ GB recommended
  • 6 GB free disk space minimum, up to 72 GB for full sound library

How Producers Use Logic Pro 12

Songwriters build full-band arrangements using the complete Session Player family — Drummer sets the pattern, Bass Player follows the chord track, Keyboard Player adds harmony, Synth Player layers electronic textures. Pop producers use Chord ID to import a reference track and instantly get a chord progression they can build over. Electronic producers use Synth Player to trigger third-party AU synths with AI-generated chord parts. Film composers layer Alchemy’s new granular mode with Session Players for cinematic pieces. Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an Apple Silicon Mac for Logic Pro 12?

Yes. Apple removed Intel Mac support entirely in Logic Pro 12. You need an M-series Mac (M1, M2, M3, M4 or M5) running macOS 15.6 or later. If you’re on Intel, stay on Logic Pro 11 which still supports Intel Macs.

How is Synth Player different from Keyboard Player?

Keyboard Player generates realistic piano and keys accompaniment. Synth Player is designed for electronic and synth-based music, generating chordal textures and bass parts and — the significant difference — Synth Player can trigger third-party Audio Units and even control external hardware synthesisers. That makes it useful as an AI-powered accompaniment tool for producers using their own synth patches.

Can I open Logic Pro 11 projects in Logic Pro 12?

Yes. Logic Pro 12 opens Logic Pro 11 projects. If you upgrade from 11 to 12, session files carry forward. Note that Intel Mac users cannot upgrade — Logic Pro 12 requires Apple Silicon.

Consider Logic Pro 11 if you’re on Intel Mac or don’t need the Synth Player and Chord ID additions.
